If Pluto is the “why” of our soul, the Lunar Nodes are the “where to.” In the methodology of Tom Jacobs, the Nodes represent the evolutionary arc of the soul—a bridge between where we have been and where we are invited to go.
The South Node: The Gift of Familiarity
Many astrological interpretations suggest that we should “leave behind” the South Node. Jacobs offers a more nuanced view: the South Node is your old talent. It represents a set of skills and perspectives your soul has mastered over many lifetimes.
It is your comfort zone. But, as in any growth process, staying only in what is familiar leads to stagnation. We don’t abandon the South Node; we learn to use its mastery without letting it dictate our future.
The North Node: The Stretch
The North Node is the territory your soul is currently exploring. It often feels “uncomfortable” or “foreign” because it requires you to develop new parts of yourself. It is your evolutionary frontier.
Growth happens in the tension between the two. It’s about taking the stability of your South Node and using it as a platform to leap toward your North Node’s potential.
A Personal Reflection: The Balance of the Arc
For a long time, I felt a pull between my need for security (my South Node) and a persistent, quiet call to step into leadership and visibility (my North Node).
Jacobs’ work taught me that I didn’t have to choose. I had to integrate. I learned that my past experiences weren’t anchors holding me back, but the very foundation I needed to build my new path. Once I stopped seeing the “new” as a threat to the “old,” my recalibration became fluid. I stopped fighting the stretch and started enjoying the expansion.
